Easy Still Life painting for fall

Colors:

White, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Dioxazine Purple, Cad Yellow Med., Cad Orange, Cad Red Lt., Thalo Blue, Chrome Oxide OR Sap Green, Burnt Umber

Following is a link to some of the paints I like to use.   Liquitex  is a brand I have been using for many years and find the palette of colors to be good, the quality is great and they have a very nice consistency.

Background:

Paint a XXX-Blended background for the top and a horizontal blend for the lower 1/3 of the canvas.

These are bundles of canvases that I think are a good bargain for the money.

Transfer design:

Use Saral or graphite to transfer

Fabric Mat:

Scumble a light layer of White + RS over.  Dry.  Come back and add white over .  Add shadows to the right side under grapes with thinned RS +DP.

Shade under cloth with thinned BU+DP on Right side and BS + SP on Left side.  Keep very thin and uneven line.

Vase:
Use Mix of BU + tch DP to make the cris-cross lines.  let dry
Light mix with White, thin with a bit of water and paint over the lines.  Add highlight toward R.  Add Deeper shadow under the leaf & behind the pumpkin.

Pumpkin:
Base with Cad. Orange + Bit of BS + a bit of Cad Red Lt..  It will probably take 2 coats as these colors are pretty transparent.
Go back with more BS and shade all edges  and add light curving lines.
Highlight in center of each partition with Cad Yellow Med + tch BS.  The use  the corner of fan brush to “scumble” a little Green+ CYM + a tch White

Stem:

Base with Burnt umber.  Highlight with green + CYM +White

Leaves:

Base with  Oxide OR Sap green + tch CYM + tch DP.  Pull CYM + BS from edges, at an angle towards vein.  Shade with tch of thinned Thalo Blue +green + tch BS

Birds of Paradise:

Pods are shades of green as leaves (above)
Feathers:  Base Cad. Yellow Med.,  overstroke with Cad Or..  Puff is CYM (+tch white)
Stamen:  Thalo Blue + tch White

Grapes:

Use a 1/2″  foam dauber to create them.
Pick up mixes of DP + (CRlt. &/or tch of Thalo Blue) + tch of white and print grapes one at a time, by pressing and doing a slight twist.  Begin with back grapes and come to front.

Then, pick up a tiny amount of white on the dauber (think dry-brush) & lightly tap each grape again for the frosted effect.

Highlight first  with

White + tch red and then with White.  After each application, dab with your finger to soften.

Cast Shadows:

Use thinned mix of  DP+ RS+ tch BU.  Paint these to the right of vase, leaves, & flowers  (light source is from the lower Left).

Hope you enjoyed the process and that you’ll love hanging this in your home.
